2004 Spring/Summer Cob Building Work Parties: Come one come all. Cob workshops are for gaining experience, and this site has lots to share. Newbies are encouraged to ask questions during workparty's progress...for more info, sign on to the scpg list serve to receive announcements and rsvp for events...The following is a projected schedule of activities -- all subject to change, please confirm prior to booking your helicopter.
Mt. Figueroa is a lovely area to visit and the location for these workshops. Spirit Pine Ranch is a privately owned 400 acre site with several cob and hybrid earthen structures. Betty Siemens and LeAnn Deluca are modest and unassuming about their acomplishments, and are natural teachers and inspiration for all who want to sculpt with cob. These self starters found out some basics and built on their land. A couple years later, cob pioneers Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley held 10 day workshops here in Spring 2003 and again in 2004. The new pix will be up soon (ahem, send some please...), the 2003 series are linked below.
Summer workshop timing is start early because the heat gets real hot during middle of the day, sometimes till later afternoon. The more participants can read and practice prior to the workshops, the more organized progress can be achieved. Basic guides are now widely available such as the Cobbers Companion and The Hand Sculpted House.
The following are all Saturday dates for the Cob Workshops.
for more workshop pix, see also Art Ludwig's shots posted on his Oasis Design site -- browse around there too for the best in Grey Water ideas and books...

for the Los Olivos workshop
About Cob Workshops

Earth is one of the oldest building materials on the planet and still the most common. It won't rot, can't burn down and bugs won't eat it Thousands of picturesque cob homes in England, Ireland and Wales have withstood centuries of rain, snow and gales and remain comfortable and joyously inhabited today.
Currently, cob is enjoying a revival of interest both in Britain and North America, where Cob Cottage Company has led the way in researching and teaching this healthy, easy to learn, environmentally sustainable technology.
You Can Learn In Just A Week How To:
* Build with Cob, a traditional mixture of earth, water, sand and straw.
* Select building materials and determine the best mixture for a given
soil.
* Sculpt a personalized house with built-in seats, shelves, niches.
* Evaluate natural alternatives for roofs, floors, plasters and insulation.
* Reduce your dependency on money and ecologically harmful practices.
* Avoid costly mistakes many novice builders make.

Permaculture Film Series planned Sites Needed
back to top
I am embarking on an ambitious video series about sustainable
communities
and permaculture systems. I would be interesting in hearing
from anyone
(particularly in Southern California -- but I would be
willing to travel to
very special and unique projects elsewhere) who currently
has a complete
permaculture system, passive solar house, earth sheltered
building, straw
bale home, innovative water catchment systems, food forests,
or any other
system that demonstrate aspects of sustainable living.
I am also seeking
individuals who are planning any type of such systems
and about to begin
the design phase. Designers, teachers, and other experts
in the above field
are also needed to lend their expertise to the program.
Participants would be expected to appear on camera to
explain their system
and take our small video crew on a tour of it and each
one will get a
finished copy of the video.
Designers, teachers, and technical experts who are interested
in
participating in the development of this project are
invited to also get in
touch and become involved. Those who lend a significant
amount of time to
the project will be granted licensing rights to the completed
series
depending on their level of involvement.
